TEACHER OF ENGLISH AND MUSIC (BOTH TO YEAR 13)
I tutored English while studying my Master of Creative Writing full-time
I taught years 9, 10, 12, and 13 at Kelston, engaging in culturally responsive teaching and learning. My seniors studied West Side Story and The Dark Horse (2014); and The Handmaid’s Tale and The Great Gatsby (2013)
I established a community choir that met weekly and engaged a wide and diverse (age and ethnicity) group, teaching music from a range of genres including barbershop, jazz, contemporary, classical, and waiata
I was part of a University of Auckland and University of Otago research team to develop an applied theatre project for first year university students, to address issues around sexual consent and positive relationships. Division included planning dance and drama to learning objectives
I was trained and, for six months, delivered interactive workshops with Year 7 and 8 students in low decile schools about family violence. This project is funded by Oranga Tamariki and uses process drama. This work taught me how to manage and teach sensitive material. It gave me rich exposure to multicultural classrooms, in particular with Maori and Pasifika students. I had the opportunity to work alongside world leader in drama pedagogy, Prof. Peter O’Connor, and developed my skills in this teaching method.
